Tukautek (Slippers)

Gorgeous, cozy and warm luxurious hand sewn tukautek 🪡 made by Celtic Inuk artist Isabelle Ranger. Isabelle was taught in her homelands by her Inuk Auntie Irene Burden, in Nunatsiavut, the Inuit Land Claims area of Labrador. Irene is a very talented artisan who makes many beaded Slippers, Pualuuk (Mitts), beaded Sealskin hearts, headbands, knitting and sewist. Proud to keep our beautiful traditions, crafts and language alive.

Her Inuit paternal family is originally from Tessialuk / Makkovik region as well as her ancestor Freeman Saunders was the postman delivering mail up the North Coast by dog team from Utshimassits ( Davis Inlet ) up to Nunainguk ( Nain ).

Crafts connects her to her culture, language and Family 🫶🏼 these are the first craft to be added to our new Indigenous Market tab on our website. Expect to see beautiful crafts like beaded earrings, fur earrings, Tukautek ( slippers), pualok ( mitts), Kisik ( sealskin) crafts, ivigak ( seagrass basketry) and more gorgeous creations by Inuit, First Nations and Métis artists.

These handcrafted slippers are then made here in Skwxwú7mesh territory, using traditional materials like  Kisik ( sealskin ) and fox fur trim, leather and sheep shearling inside for a naturally warm and breathable slipper.

Isabelle is crafting and fundraising for the next trip to Nunatsiavut to craft, fish, hunt and berry in her traditional territory with Family.
